Sailing in the backwaters of Kerala

South India is a region where life is more relaxed than the rest of the country. It is no coincidence that it is the cradle of Ayurveda, an alternative medicine that is also finding many enthusiasts in the West. People come  in Kerala especially for detoxing and rejuvenating treatments.

We will perhaps dedicate one of the next articles to this topic. In this post I want instead to dwell on an area of Kerala that deserves a visit. We talk about the backwaters, an incredible eco-system formed by lakes and lagoons connected to each other, which runs parallel to the coast washed by the Arabian Sea. Here uncontaminated nature offers enchanting beauty scenarios that are the background to the serene life of the villages.

I would recommend spending a few days experiencing the naturalistic and eco-friendly experience of houseboat navigation. In the local language, these boats are called Ketuvallam, in the past they were used for the transport of goods and people, as they are suitable for navigating in the backwaters' stagnant waters, today they are dedicated to relaxation and to the discovery of this incredible habitat, a real paradise for birds. During the day you can exploring the area, while in the evening the houseboat is anchored for a night's sleep.

Xandari Riverscape has a few cabins, furnished simply but with care, common areas of understated elegance. During the day you can go canoeing, visit the villages, or relax and read a book on the deck. The food on board  is excellent  with local cuisine made with fresh ingredients.

So what are you waiting for being lulled by the calm blackwaters of Kerala?
